Green is connecting to our environment

Green means going back to our roots

What is “Green”?

The term “Green” is synonymous with earth-friendly, environmentally friendly, sustainable, eco-friendly, and recyclable.  The basic premise of using or “going green” is to minimize our personal and corporate footprint on the earth in an effort to preserve this magnificent world for future generations.

There are various points of view on the true definition of green.  Those more concerned with preserving nature, insist that preserving the trees, and natural environment from human developers is the meaning of green. Still, the energy conservationists will define green as protecting the world from depletion of all natural energy.

One thing is certain though: the focus of green is to protect the natural earth elements from the devastation of human green and extortion.

How to Find Green Products and Gadgets?

Green is certainly the new black when it comes to favorite shopping colors.  From Wal-Mart to Whole Foods, the power of green is taking shape.  When shopping online, use words like “green products” in your search engine query.  Other helpful terms may be “sustainable products, earth friendly products, eco friendly or natural products.”  You may want to put a Google Alert on your favorite terms and be notified by Google when they index a new product.  Of course, one of your best tools would be to bookmark “New Green Gadgets,” and allow us to be your up-to-date source of new eco-friendly products that can enhance your kitchen, home, office or lifestyle.

How to Choose Green Gadgets?

Choosing the right green gadgets for your pleasure is of course, to begin with, personal.  However are many products that suggest “green” without actually meeting the criteria.

Here are some practical guidelines for identifying the truly green from the fakes and marketing spin mastery in this emerging major market.

  1. Recognize that just because the marketing of the product promises environmentally friendly it may not be true.  A good example would be kitchen gadgets that claim to be made of recycled product, but packaged in elaborate plastic packaging which is so dense you need a small saw to get it open.
  2. Cleaning products made of lemon or orange oil may sound “green,” but the oils themselves can be toxic if used in non-ventilated areas.  Be sure to read labels and don’t assume that because there is an orange on the label, all is well.
  3. Look for products that can be charged from natural or solar energy.  The best green gadget that requires high voltage to power it, is still taking a toll on our natural resources. There are products in development stage right now that will power cell phones by using your own body energy when walking.
  4. Eco Logo is a good Canadian reference for products meeting green standards you can trust.
  5. If you are looking for products less likely to pollute the environment, refer to Design for Environment or (DfE).  The project is a collaboration of many stakeholders to minimize pollution and the results of toxic invasion in our air, water, and earth.
  6. Refer to Energy Star, a third party US government backed organization that researches and recognizes products that meet green industry standards and criteria.

Consumers can make choices that minimize their impact on the environment and focus on sustainable practice while enjoying products and services that enhance their lifestyle and aid in convenience.  The key is a re-education in the choices available, and understanding and assuming personal responsibility for  the basic impact of choices we make.

A Green Lifestyle

Green living is about minimizing waste, (so avoiding over-consumption) and effective management of the brilliant resources available to us from mother earth.

You can “GO GREEN” while you enjoy yourself and live better.  Protecting the earth is protecting you at the same time and optimizing your own life experience.

Here are a few tips to get your started:

  1. Look around and appreciate. Take time to notice the world you are trying to protect. Take note of the various shades of green, blue and brown in the scene while you drive. Note the wild paintings in the sunset sky. Allow yourself to feel your connection to the world around you.
  2. Chow down GREEN. Eat better.  Choose fresh produce, with no spray if you can. Find a new way to enjoy green veggies, fresh fruit, whole grains, nuts, and legumes.  If the earth produces them and you are made of earth, chances are, you will feel vitality and energy when you absorb them.  Remember, they grow (generate) by sun and moon light, solar energy – and so do you.
  3. Lather up in less time.  The morning shower is a pleasure no one wants to miss, but the hot water tank need not go cold while you do it.
  4. Flick the switch. Turn off the light when you leave the room.  I see one on in my other room as I write; will I get up off the couch and turn it off?
  5. Don’t toss out the battery – recharge instead. (Of course you will need to buy the rechargeable type to begin with.)
  6. Gradually change your light bulbs to the low energy light bulbs.  They are more expensive at the onset, but they last forever it seems and use far less energy.  You can find them at most grocery stores now.
  7. Put on a sweater and turn down the heat. Our bodies are more active, have more energy and feel alive when we are not “cooking” from an overused furnace.  You don’t have to go “COLD” turkey, just readjust your family’s bodies by a degree every week or two.
  8. Do you turn off your computer at night?
  9. Ask for paperless bills. Why have on paper, what you can do online? (You can also try asking for no bills!)
  10. Leave the keys at home! Walk to the store, and carry home a couple bags of groceries. Bicycle to the post office or coffee shop.  Feel your body come alive while you leave the GAS in the car.
